Carol Oborn
Carol was born in Twin Falls, Idaho, and was in a Mormon family. Her pre-teen years were spent on a 40 acre farm in Hansen, Idaho. Her third grade teacher, Mrs. Wells was her first piano teacher, and the piano in the basement is where she practiced.
As Carol says, "My parents bought a piano and paid for my piano lessons from the band teacher's wife, Ann Kofed. I was playing for Sunday school at the age of 9, and continued the association with church music."
Carol began playing the organ while in southern California. At age 16 she became the organist for her local Mormon congregation. She also accompanied the high school choir, and was a member of the orchestra, and a piano trio. Music has served Carol as both hobby and creative outlet.
Carol attended Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, graduating with a Master's degree in Physiology and Biophysics.
Carol returned to church music in 1980, playing for Sunday school, as a choir accompanist, and substitute organist. She took pipe organ lessons from Charles Benbow, the former organist of Central Presbyterian Church, Houston. He served to influence her organ technique, and emphasized the aspects of successful hymn playing.
As Carol puts it, "Church music has been my passion for many years and it is the reason I left the Mormon Church. As I read the lyrics of many well known hymns, I realized that there was a relationship possible with Jesus Christ that I did not have. Those same lyrics now reaffirm each week the saving gospel that I have embraced as a Lutheran."
Carol has been at Mount Olive since 2000, and we are pleased to have her as our music director. In addition to her regular responsibilities as organist, and choir director, she also plays for weddings and funerals. These should be scheduled with her personally.
